Preview of the Big Chill House Mural

The Big Chill House in Kings Cross underwent a brilliant make-over under the watchful eye of Lucy Tauber and opened its newly painted doors a couple of months back.
I was commissioned by Lucy as part of a team of illustrators including Le Gun and Miss Led to paint a mural. As the wall proposed for the mural runs alongside the staircase to the second floor we decided on a theme of birds escaping from cats. The result: I drew a number of golden pigeons (which originally were to be canaries, but the canaries would have been too small) escaping from the paws of two eager white Savannah cats. There's something absolutely amazing about these long long cats!
A lovely job. Murals is definitely what I would love to do more of. Thank you Lucy x.

I haven't updated in a while, but! became mrs MK-O in the meantime, so very big news!

And as most of you, am getting very excited about winter and snow and skiing/snowboarding this coming season. A while back the US mega brand Armada asked me to do a design for their current 2010/2011 Men's AR7 skis. We then modified the print to suit Men's Apparel Jackets. Check out their website for lots of fun things.

Fish Free Friday website is finally up!

FFF is part of the Plastiki journey to tackle/highlight the overuse of plastic within our every day consumption. Over the past few months working with Tia Grazette as the art director, I have been drawing different species of fish which are close to serious extinction levels. Absolutely wonderful project, please check the Plastiki website out and read up about their voyage on their plastic boat, the fish and way way more! Perhaps we can make a wee difference by applying small restrictions to our diet.
In total 52 different species will be presented. Keep checking back and be good!

A most fascinating article about the intense structure of a bee colony. In the time that we should be most aware of their impact on our lives and our food production mechanisms.
The first drawing shows a loose anatomical view of the worker, the queen and the drone.

The second ink drawing features a birch forest.
The way it stands- one of those rare framed images in the back of your mind, one of the beauties this planet has to offer. Tender and sinister. Loved.

We are in Nebraska! And it is pretty cold out here.

Muffins

An idea came to mind to make a cookbook together with some folks from 2 and 4. Perhaps this book will one day see the day of light, perhaps this project will transform into some other medium and dimension, for now, there is this plate of muffins. I'm very fond of it and in some ways this is a great triumph for my super slow, but steady transition into colour.

As I was still studying at college, a job offer came through, where I was asked to pitch for a corporate visual artist position. (I didnt get the job, but ended up with these humorous drawings)
I'm still quite happy with them and think that imagery of this kind should definitely penetrate the high brow suit district.

When I was young, a lot of my time was spent in the outdoors of Russia's country houses known as the dachas.
The home grown vegetable patches with some 40 plus types of tomatoes was forte of Mr Podlesniy. I remember him as his house had burned down one year, and yet he managed to carry on.
Somehow when I found this drawing by accident it brought me right back to the time I was a little girl, to the place called Chepelovo, near Chekhov, named after the great Russian writer and playwright Anton Chekhov.

I have been putting this off for a few years, and now I am finally coming to the natural conclusion that I want to see what my work would be like in colour. So I have started to try it out with old work.
I seem to be into the colours of the baroque era- the clashing baby blues and purples alongside pinks and yellows. there is something innocent and erotic within this gamut.

I took a snapshot of this old man as I was walking one morning, maybe afternoon on one of Yalta's sea fronts... it was sometime back in 2001. We were there by chance, a big group gathered together to spend no other than the New Years, in Russia's most famous summer resort. Those memories are imprinted within my mind. It was a great time, full of freedom and an air of possibility around us. That same year, that same month, I was saying good bye to my mum and my sister as they were moving to the far shores of the United States. Somehow this man, this lonely old man captured the melody which cried within me at the time. I didn't say hello. I should have.

The trainers came later. Much later. In fact, to some degree, they have made him into a mockery, but to be honest, it could have been him, in an old pair of trainers. Borrowed from his grandson, or maybe found in some neighbouring alley. There are so many hidden paths in Yalta.
So much poverty, yet lots of laughter.
